Abortion statistics, country by country
What national registers actually report, from 1960 to 2024. 39 countries, three ways of counting, and no estimates filled in where a country published nothing.
Read this before the charts. These are
reported figures, not an estimate of how many abortions happen.
Where the law is restrictive, procedures move outside the system that
counts them, so the reported number falls without the underlying number
following it. A low bar can mean a low rate, or it can mean a country
that does not count. The two are not distinguishable in this data, and
nothing on this page should be read as if they were.
How these numbers are measured
- Number
- Legally induced abortions reported to Eurostat by each country's national statistical office for that calendar year.
- Rate — per 1,000 women aged 15–49
- The reported number divided by the female population aged 15–49 on 1 January of the same year, summed from Eurostat's five-year age bands, times 1,000. Using 1 January rather than mid-year population shifts rates by a fraction of a percent; the choice is stated here because it is the first thing worth checking.
- Per 100 live births
- The reported number divided by live births in the same year, times 100. This one moves when the birth rate moves, not only when abortions do.
- Missing years
- Left missing. Lines break, bars are absent, and countries that reported nothing still appear in the ranking. Nothing is interpolated, carried forward or set to zero.
- Comparing countries
- Definitions differ. Some countries count only procedures performed on residents, others include non-residents; gestational limits and reporting duties vary. Treat cross-country differences of a point or two as noise. Read the sources page before quoting a comparison.
